deactivating apps on android smartphone?

i would like to keep some apps on my cell phone but have them deactivated so they don't do anything, anyone help me?
also, if possible, i would still like to be notified through the google market when an update is available

if you don't run the app... its not going to do anything, so you don't need to "deactivate" it

you can also go into your settings, and look at the running app, and close any running.

Only rooted phones can do it.

With Titanium Backup (root required), you can "freeze" apps. They still get updated, but they can't run or appear in the app drawer.

EDIT: Some apps are "self-starting", which means they will run even if you don't run them manually. When frozen, they won't run at all.
