I know that to get a stereo cable (e.g 3.5 mm jack) to split into left and right (RCA outputs) i need a Y cable, so im going to connect my audio out from my PC to my hi fi'.

Im using a Realtek HD sound card and going to buy a 3m Y splitter.

<<Would there be much signal degradation (losing the low frequencies) from splitting a stereo signal or so little that its no real concern?>>

The audio will be for possible music monitoring and recording but the hifi itself is good quality (more so than the original pc speakers).

For true sound reproduction it's never good to use y cables as it changes the input impedance to both amplifiers and also lowers the impedance that the card sees on it's output.

However for most people this effect is minimal and unable to be discerned therefore try it and if you don't like the outcome you will need a preamp stage to boost signal back up to line level.
