Deposit for cell phone plan?

Are you charged a deposit for the phone or for the plan when you open a new account? Like, if you already own a phone that you can use on the providers network, will they charge you a deposit on the service? Or do you just get charged a deposit when you are getting discounted equipment with your plan?
