The derailleur seems to be drooping, and so the chain is not pulled tightly like it should be, and nearly drags to the ground. The bike operates, but the chain comes off if I hit any bump or try to accelerate too quickly. I am afraid to ride it again until I fix it, because I don't want to cause any more damage.

I have a Diamondback Sorrento (2009). I really do not know much, but I would like to fix it myself. I am a student who does not like to spend money, so taking it to the bike shop is my LAST option. I found out that the Rear Derailleur is SRAM X.4 from this website: http://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/BikeSpecs.aspx?Year=2009&Brand=Diamondback&Model=Sorrento&Type=bike

I have talked to a few friends about it, but the one who could help me most lives far away. He said to just poke it, and if it is tight, something is stuck. If it just hangs, a spring is missing. I can't tell which it is, but I think maybe something is stuck. Are we on the right track?

Would photos or videos of me poking at the derailleurur help any?
