Did The Film "The Last Temptation of Christ" Warrant All of the Controversy?

I know that in the late 80s when this film came out, that it was met with protests and religious people going crazy.

I also know some people who saw it and said that the film was "boring", I guess they were expecting to see something groundbreaking..;

Have you seen the film? What was/is so controversial about it?
