I am confused I thought that Divx files are meant to be smaller than the original size. I have used a few programmes select divx as the output but it is the same size as the original. Am I doing something wrong or have I got it wrong that divx makes things smaller
divx is just another file type typically they are smaller because they are usually illegal copy's of movies or media,
they are usually also smaller because they are usually torrent downloads so dont want to be too big allowing a quicker download time for illegal people !!!

it depends on what the original video stream encoding was, if it's already significantly compressed than you aren't going to gain anything by converting it to another container format.
