DMG files on external hard drive don't show up?

I downloaded a few .dmg files and put them on my external hard drive to transfer them to my Mac, but none of them are showing up. I don't know of any kind of hidden files/folders in OS X, but could that be the problem? Everything else on my hard drive is there and works fine. Suggestions?

if you downloaded them on windows and then try to transfer them to mac it may not work because mac does not support the same files windows does.
