Competition? Is it nothing more than an Inquisition with various Islamic sects fighting for control.

If your answer is it was the CIA don't bother. The Wars in the Mideast are older than the USA or the CIA
 
It's their way of converting humanity to Islam. Since they can't convince people to convert, they want us dead. That's exactly what Muhammad did.

And the situation over there is more like the Protestant reformation. The Sunni and Shia aren't particularly fond of each other. But, they will get together to kill the infedels.
