Do Bittorrent clients piggyback on existing data transfers?

Whenever I use Vuze to download something the download speed varies, but for the most part it seems that whenever I'm doing something that requires a large amount of data to be transferred across the internet - online gaming, generally - the download speed increases exponentially. Is this because Vuze is piggybacking on my existing connection in some way so that it can transfer more data? Or is it because my computer has more bandwidth available to it because of the game I'm playing? Just grasping at straws here, so anything you've got would be appreciated.

Thanks!
