Do cavity fillings hurt?

Im getting a filling today and im freaking out. The dentist said it was verrrrrry small, and she said I won't be needing the novicane or whatever the shot is. She said she wont be touching a nerve while drilling. WILL IT HURT WITHOUT THE MEDICINE?????
