Do guys ask to hang out with girls they are not romantically interested in?

We are both seniors in high school and there is this guy at a different school who has asked me to hang out with him a couple times. We just went to the movies. He offered to pay both times and even picked me up at my house once.

I have been getting mixed signals from him lately and I was just wondering if guys generally want to hang out with girl they are not romantically interested in. We just met recently and are not really good friends or anything like that.
 
There are some guys that do just like to hang out with a "girl" friend, and just be friends. But almost all guys have some kind of crush or something they like about a girl he chooses to hang out with. They normally don't talk to and hang out with chicks they don't like.
