Do I have to replace all four tires on my Subaru Forrester?

Two of the tires are old and bald but two rear tires look OK. The tire place is telling me that I need to replace all of them or it will damage the transfer case. Does it seem right or the tire place is trying to make me spend extra? Please tell me if you are an experienced mechanic.
Thanks

Yes you should replace all 4-tires on your AWD. It is also not good to not rotate your tires to let the fronts go bald and the rears have tread still on a AWD car. That can also do damage the transfer case. A LOT has changed since 1970 when you could change only one or two tires. The Jeep Grand Cherokee , mid 90`s, came out with a few that had AWD and no choice of choosing 2 or 4-WD and had to replace all 4 tires, then they went back to be able to choose the 4 WD option again.
So I would change all 4 and then keep up on your tire rotations, every 6000 to 8000 miles to keep them wearing evenly. I rotate mine every other oil change. Good Luck.

ive been working in tire shops since 1970 and you can buy one at a time if you want to they pulling your chain you should be able to look at a tire and know its wore out and it will not damage anything... on any car ... you never want to drive with one tire a bigger size than all the others i would go to another shop they trying to rip you off.. easy to drive to another shop and say would you look at my tires

YES! The AWD drive system can be damaged if you only replace one or two tires. I don't know if your car is under warranty, but if it is, I can guarantee you Subaru won't cover any damage if they see that. AWD and 4x4 vehicles need to have all the tires replaced at the same time. The only exception is 4x4's, if you never use the 4x4 system and leave it in 2wd. The Subaru AWD system can't be switched on and off.

your car is all wheel drive.so even though the back tires are ok looking you should put on all four or damage may occur.the dealer is not lying.
