Do I need to decode or convert an avi file before putting it on a flash...

...drive to watch on my DVD player? My DVD player has a usb outlet and I want to put an .avi file onto a flash drive and watch it on my DVD player. I just copied and pasted it but it won't play. Do I need to convert or decode it with a program first?
