Do I need to put a game in my Nintendo 64 for it to work?

So I just bought a used N64 off of Craigslist today and it looks great. The only thing is when I turned it on, nothing really happened. I hooked it up right and everything. The lady I got it from was only selling the console so I have to still buy some games. Is the screen black because I don't have a game in it? Please help!

The black screen is normal fore a N64 when there is no game cartridge in it.

As you have not said if the N64 has it The system requires the Jumper Pack when the Expansion Pack is not present or else there will be no picture on the TV screen when a game cartridge is in.
