Do iPhone apps/games cost money when in use?

So like,i just got the iPhone 4 a few days ago, and wanted to know if the games cost money. (They call it "apps" haha) Theres a feature called "Game Center" and you use that to play with other players, so it uses internet, and some of the games i play have that feature but you don't play with other people, it just shows scores from all around. So i'm wondering if they do cost money when your using them, 'cause if they do ... S*** ..
