Do people in the Washington metropolitan area often opt for "staycations" rather

than expensive vacations? **PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. THIS DETAIL WILL ASSIST YOU IN ANSWERING THIS QUESTION ACCOMMODATINGLY**

New Yorkers tend to travel very far to visit destinations, owing to these two main circumstances:

1. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey are very proud to have their airports having 1.3 million flights each year and JFK, the USA's busiest point of access to several cities in every continent except Antarctica;

2. New York City is at the center of the Northeast Corridor, in terms of both geographic location and concentration of population.

Since Maryland and Virginia touch borders surrounding DC, I was wondering if people in Northern Virginia and Suburban Maryland often opt for shorter-distance, less expensive "staycations".

This may be because:

1. Neither state (DC is a district) has a city with a metro area of a population exceeding 3,000,000 people. The closest city to that minimum number would be Baltimore.
2. Both states have regionally-recognized small and medium charming cities. Virginia has Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, Charlottesville, etc., while Maryland has Baltimore, Annapolis, Ocean City, etc. They also both have the beautiful Chesapeake Bay and historically significant Civil War sites.
3. Both state's tourism industries are growing. Despite the recession, both Virginia and Maryland's overseas tourists (any tourist from anywhere other than the USA, Canada, and Mexico) number went up in Calendar Year 2009, and both states are in the top 20.

The staycations I was referring to in the aforementioned are as simple as driving over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge or connecting between Metro, MARC, and/or VRE at Union Station. Do you agree they are common? If so, what do you believe influences them, besides the travel distance?

I know I have provided an exorbitant amount of detail in this question, only as long as you read it carefully, you'll help me like this is one of the questions I was the happiest to ask.

I will appreciate detailed answers. I would also like you to provide where you obtained the information in your answer, even if it is from personal belief or experience.

IMPORTANT: This is not a homework assignment. I am thinking about planning a "staycation" if many of the metro area-residing people often partake in such, and I want to see what the online community participants say about it. Please answer helpfully, not confrontingly.

Thank you for your consideration in this question. Like I said, please use as much detail as possible and provide where you obtained the information, even if it's from personal experience or belief.
