Do smartphones work in 2G areas?

I want to upgrade to a Google Nexus 4, but I live in an area where there is only 2G coverage. Will data not work, or will it just be slow? Can you still go on the internet/facebook/twitter and check email and other things like that? Thanks.

No, 3G and 2G are two different frequencies, if you want to use internet you need 3G with 3G.
