Do used trucks or sedans handle long trips better?

I need to buy a fairly cheap used car, but am planning a 3,000 mile road trip down the road. I want to buy a car that will be able to handle day to day commuting as well as that long road trip. I don't want it to die on the way there if at all possible!!! And of course I'd like to be able to use it after I move there. My dream is to have a truck. Do trucks handle long trips better? Are Toyota cars the best?
