Do you think an online marketplace for non-profits looking for software...

...would be useful? Non-profits have many of the same needs as any other business. For example, they need software. But since they often can't pay the same prices, they need to look and constantly ask for discounts.

Then there are companies that aren't big in any way, that would love to give their software away to a non-profit, one, to help people who need something, and two, to get exposure and user testing of their product.

Does anyone think some kind of online marketplace or exchange would be beneficial to non-profits who need IT services like software as well as companies that want to provide these services for a deeply discounted or waived price?

To put it very basically, the marketplace would be a website with 2 areas. One where non-profits can list the needs they have (e.g. we need online project management software, we need a server cabinet, etc.) And the second area, services companies, can mention things they are willing to offer to non-profits at huge discounts or for free.

Know your competition. If you can do what they do better, then go for it. But the companies that do this do it very well, and are very well known and used.

Techsoup.org provides a 'one-stop' shop for nonprofits to get software at greatly reduced cost as offered by the manufacturers.

As well, Giftsinkind.org (the 12th largest charity in the US) does exactly what your second area proposes, and on a global scale.
