since this house shows how we value ourself and our self worth, its hard to get comfortable, because theres really no time for it?

Saturn anywhere will make the issues of that house obstacles for you until you have overcome the trials that will lead to redemption. Really. I think Saturn has the capacity to help us live blessed lives if we open up to his lessons and do our homework.

I have Saturn in the 2nd; I don't feel miserable. However, I am poor, though I claim to be happily poor because I seek my values in creative pursuits that as yet bring no revenue.

If I get down, it's usually because I have Capricorn in the 12th house.
Of all the Saturn placements, this one is purgatory - but it depends on aspects to the planets and environment, of course. With Saturn hitting the 2nd and 12th, I can just as well renounce the material world and join a nunnery or some alternative community that will offer sanctuary - our values, security and material comfort are challenged in some way by Saturn in the 2nd.

I read somewhere that 2nd house Saturn has an inherently mean streak and a tendency to greed, so we must always help friends out with a few dollars here and there; practice charity. There is also the tendency to renounce it all - in some christian frenzy, but we will suffer if we do.

We often hide our attachment to things and criticise others for materialism instead. However, it is well to remember that the search for material comfort and security can allow us space to exercise spiritual peace and develop healthy values. The Chinese Buddhists understand this better than anyone.

I get a lot of solace from cooking - it is the house of Taurus, after all.

No, not necessarily...... it could indicate a value of serious matters; self-discipline; long-term dedication to people, ideals and goals.
 
The 2nd house also has to do with money, too, so with Saturn in it, you might be very good at building wealth for long term.
