Do you think there's a link between climate/religion and a country's development?

I'm working on a school assignment about development; more specifically, about how the US became a world power, along with Canada, and other countries in the American continent didn't. I asked my dad what his thoughts on this were, and he said two things.

1. Religion, which was brought to us from the UK and France (Anglicanism and such), while most of the rest of the continent is Catholic, having been conquered by Spain and Portugal. My dad says Anglicanism, Protestantism, etc, have much more several rules than Catholicism, which makes their followers be more strict and organized in everything they do.

2. Climate, and this goes back to Europe. According to my dad, people from Northern countries, which are of course colder, had to work much harder in order to save up for the Winter, whereas people from Southern countries, including Africa, didn't work as much as they had lots of resources at hand's reach all year long, because of the warmer climate.

I can't find anything to back this up, if I were to include it in my assignment. What do you think?

I think this question was developed in Jared Diamond's guns, germs ... can't remember the rest. He looked at developed nations v underdeveloped nations and suggested climate did have an influence.
Try looking up 'jared diamond' on amazon, you'll get a synopsis of his work. He also wrote 'colapse' looking at the rise & fall of nations and the reasons behind their fall.
