Does a cell phone with 40mb internal memory need a micro sd card?

If I buy the micro sd card, how do I use it? Do I just put it in my phone (my phone accepts it) and then the things get saved to the card? Do all the games and music I download go to the card then? Like, how does it work? Thanks
