I met this guy about a year and a half ago. He was from the czech republic and was studying abroad in the U.S. for a year. We were friends but nothing more. After he returned to the Czech republic and I myself went to study abroad in South East Asia we began to write letters to each other. Our letters were thoughtful and we wrote about memories of each other and how our life outside of the U.S. was going. I'm now back in the U.S. and we continue to write to each other through letters and long e-mails.

He says that he will try to come back to the U.S. on a work and travel program next summer. Those around me have told me not to get too emotionally involved with him because of the low chances of our relationship ever working out. The joke is that he is GI (geographically inconvenient).

What's your opinion?

It's probably a good idea not to get your hopes up, but if you really want it to work, then be proactive and make it work. With things like this, you can't wait around for things to work. It's your responsibility to make it possible (with his help of course). If there's really something there, then you'll both put in the effort to be together. Just make sure it doesn't become one-sided, he should be putting in just as much effort as you.
