Does anyone else see becoming a vegetarian/vegan as a trend?

I know there are plenty of people out there who really do feel that making this decision is much better for them and the world, but those who just out of the blue say "I think I'll be a vegetarian today" get on my nerves. It's like, do you even know why you are doing this? Most that I know of rub in in other people's faces, like they're much better people now and everyone who eats meat is beneath them. It seems like it just so "hip" and "trendy" now, everyone's doing it. It just irks me. Yes, I know there are plenty of genuine vegetarians/vegans out there, but I've just come across so many smug individuals. Does anyone else feel this way? And I am in no way trying to offend vegetarians or vegans, just the little jerks who want to feel special without doing anything major to change the world.
I guess I'm just venting a little, I really don't expect anyone to answer this.

well, i am going to answer this!
i do feel the same way.
i was a vegetarian for like three years, am soon to be one again.
i had to stop because of an illness.
but i became a vegetarian because every time i sat down to dinner or whatever, i felt, and still feel, sick to my stomach knowing that my meal used to be a living, breathing, conscious thing that could feel pain.
its disgusting.
and the fact that people only become veg*ns because famous people do it, or because it is green [yet those people usually litter and drive suvs] really gets me off.

Pardon me for sounding "holier than thou", but being a vegan *does* make someone a better person. Think about it. Are people who don't murder better than people who do? Yes, they are. Are non-rapists better people than rapists? Yes, they are. Are you above Ted Bundy? Are you above a child-killer? Vegans are above non-vegans. That's not what most people want to hear, but that's because they know it's true.

A lot of people are doing this now cause they think it's cool.
I know one girl who claims to be a vegetarian, but eats chicken cause she needs protein for softball. When I told her to just eat tofu, she came up with a bunch of lame excuses. She even has icons all over the myspace that say things like "animals are friends not food"

Unfortunately you have a valid point, been veggie for so many years, now almost vegan, can relate to the "smug"thing myself from a few vegans ,its a drag hearing the graphic details that youre aware of already being the only thing talked about, would never go back as my beliefs are strong but can remember catching myself preaching it was a wakeup call,so now am not one to burble on about it,though nobody is allowed to eat animal in my home.Balance is good.;)

Undoubtedly some people do it because it's a "trend" and "cool".. Mostly younger people and you can always tell especially when they say "I am a vegetarian, I only eat seafood/chicken..."

Some are genuinely concerned about one issue or another (health, environment, cruelty etc) and they think it's the best thing based on their own ideals..

It would be unfair to say that being a vegetarian gives them this attitude that you mention... These types of people are probably like that in whatever they do.. So even of they still eat meat, they would still exhibit the same preachy, holier-than-thou and contemptuous attitude towards other people who do not share their idea of what should be...I've always said, these are mostly the people who post here complaining abut how other folks "don't understand me" and ask why people hate them for being vegetarians when it is actually their general personalities the puts off people... Again, you can tell b y the questions they ask and the language they use..

I'm 53 and have been a vegetarian since I was 15, so I don't look on it as trendy. Actually, back in the 1960's and 1970's it was far more trendy than today, and there were a lot more of the short-time vegetarians around.

These days I see a lot of people who legitimately wish to adopt the lifestyle but end up getting pressured by family and friends into dropping it after a short while. But frankly if you see people "rub in in other people's faces," that has nothing to do with being vegetarian or even being trendy. That's just being a JERK (I stuck with a polite word).

Oh, and I do feel your question touches on a legitimate point. You're not just venting. :)

I don't think it matters why a person becomes vegetarian.
The more people that do, the better it is for the planet.
Every little helps. What would you class as something "major to change the world"?
I have never ever met a veggie that rubs it in people's faces or thinks they are better than other people. However, I have met some meat eaters who are anti-vegetarian for reasons that I cannot fathom. I think they feel judged, because obviously if someone has made the choice to be veggie, they believe that it is wrong to eat meat for whatever reason, and therefore the meateater FEELS judged but I guess there is no way around this. How would one do it differently? Keep it hidden? You have to let people know so that they don't try to feed you chicken and stuff.
