L. Frank Baum wrote the book Wizard of Oz, he based the description of Kansas on his experiences of living in South Dakota. When he wrote "I have a feeling we're not in Kansas any more." that may have been a hint that he never was. My daughter took a summer school class and they did a unit on the book, she said it was symbolic about the politics of the time in the US.
I consider L. Frank Baum an evil man in that while he was a newspaper editor in South Dakota he wrote an editorial saying that the massacre of 300 Lakota, mostly women and children, at Wounded Knee was a proper solution to the "Indian problem." He called for the extermination of all Native Americans.
