At first i thought it was from Ibsen, but i couldn't find a story like this in any of his works.
The story:
A woman marries a man from a well-to-do family and has two children, a boy and a girl. The couple live with his parents in an atmosphere of constant merriment and gaiety. Gramps is a lech who gets the maid pregnant. Gramma doesn't care.
Life is good, until the woman's husband dies. Then she marries a presumably Luthern pastor, and life goes from merry to dour, very, very dour.
Any ideas?
