Does anyone who works in corrections?

know why the jail where Bernie Madoff is has lights on 24 hours a day? I know he committed a horrible crime, but I think it's cruel to have lights on all the time. I would lose my mind eventually. I know I would. Why do they do this?

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.
I know that is a flip answer but I am sure most people realize conditions in prison are not ideal and that this society doesn't try to rehabilitate prisoners as much as it punishes them.
