Does digitalizing 16mm film to DVD reduce quality?

How much does the quality of the film get effected when transferring 16mm to DVD? I love how my film looks on 16mm.....but I'm afraid that digitalizing it will ruin it.

Send out a short clip to be digitized and see for yourself.

If you are having it digitized to a 4K video, it should look great. Full HD (1080p) will look okay and probably HD (720p) will not look quite as good.

I suggest you have a single sample of your best clip digitized into each of those formats and then view them on your DVD player and see what you think. You are the artist after all and YOU have to be satisfied with the results

The word you're struggling with is "digitizing", not "digitalizing". It all depends upon the method used. If it is done frame by frame with a large optical sensor & a clean print, then the result can look as good as the original. If it is done merely with a 16 mm projector, screen & digital camcorder, the results will be disappointing. The frame by frame method is very tedious, time consuming & expensive.

As usual, fhotoace's answer is excellent advice.
