if so, how? and does he ever come back to life, and if so, how?
 
for the original FMA, yes he does.
but al brings em back using the phylosyphers stone thats in his body

if ur asking about FMA brotherhood, no, he never does
 
I'm pretty sure he wouldn't ever die completely, cause he's one of the 2 main characters. Don't you think a lot of people would quit watching if Ed died? I would, cause it wouldn't be any good. I've not read all the manga, but i'm on the part where he got swallowed by Gluttany (idk if i spelled it right or not) in the anime.
