Does Judaism have to be inherited through the parents?

I heard somewhere that in order to be Jewish your mother had to be Jewish as well - not that I'm thinking of converting.

Yes, if your Mother is Jewish, then you are Jewish. This is true of Orthodox and Conservative Judaism. Reform and Reconstructionist Judaism will consider a child Jewish if their Father was Jewish and if they were raised in a Jewish household.

The only other way you are Jewish is if you go through the conversion process.
 
I don't believe this is true, one can convert to Judaism by ceremonially becoming a Jew.
