I have a 2000 BMW E46 318 saloon. I haven't managed to set off the alarm even when I try to do it intentionally. This leaves me to question whether or not it actually has an alarm system.
I've tried:
1. Locking the car with the key fob, and then opening the door with the key (I tried this with an E46 325, and it set the alarm off. But not on my car...)
2. Leaving the window open, locking the doors and then putting my hand inside the car
Neither methods set the alarm off, and I left it 30 seconds before trying to trigger the alarm. I've tried these methods on another BMW E46 (Which is 1 year newer) and it did set off the alarm.
Any ideas as to why I can't set off the alarm on my car? I believe my car is the SE spec (not sure but it does have E/W all round + multi function steering wheel and traction control - I've seen E46's without these)
