Does optical from a TV to a Home Theater create true digital surround?

I am running a new blu ray player from an HDMI cord to the TV. There is already an optical cable running from the Samsung LCD HDTV to the home theater system (not a receiver) to create surround sound for the tv, the only audio input in the sound system. Will running the HDMI from blu ray to the HDTV, then the optical form the HDTV to the home theater still replicate the sound that would be used if running an optical from the Blu Ray to the Home theater?
