No you don't need it to work you can use wifi But i would suggest waiting a few days for nexus one its supposed to be out on the 5th of January for 199 usable on. Any mobile network has around the same specs.as the behold 2 except better screen and updated with the newest Google android.
Oh and its faster than any one out now
