Your engine runs most efficiently when it is hot, so in the winter, it takes longer to warm up to optimal temp, and works harder to maintain that temp because it cools down faster. If you are in snow and rain, the extra road conditions take more power too. It also takes more juice in your battery to start your car in the winter.
