Today we realized that our dog has a clogged anal gland after we noticed her but was really red and had a big bump by it. I made an appt. with the vet for tomorrow but about 30 min ago the gland burst open. She is now licking it like crazy but it doesn't seem to bother her. Do I need to clean that area on her or anything? I have never heard of this problem about dogs before today so Im totally clueless on what I need to do before she goes to the vet. I just don't want her to get an infection or anything.

I've heard that some breeds need to have their anal glands "emptied" every few months or that can happen. I would suggest taking her into your vet and discussing it with them.

Check out this site - it might help.

Haha wow... gross.

Didn't even read the add'l info, but just wanted to say that that headline was probably the most bizzare thing I read all day.

Cheers

Typically, this happens because the gland gets impacted, or infected. You should use warm water to clean the area. You can apply a warm compress to the area for a few minutes. When you go to the vet, they will clean the area, and get her started on some antibiotics. It would also be a wise idea to have an e-collar, so that she can't lick. That won't help, and really, its gross.

Yeah, its a real problem, I thought it was a joke when I first heard of it. My friend's dog had this problem, he had to periodically pop these pustules inside the dog's colon or something, and it smelled like hell.

The fact it burst means it is already infected.Clean the area well, put her in the tub for a butt wash then see the vet in the am for antibiotics
