Dream or Premonition....?

How can I tell the difference between a dream or a premonition?

About a month before my boyfriend and I broke up I dreamt we were going to breakup. It obviously happened. Then a few days after we broke up I had a dream we got backtogether and ever since that dream he's been in ALL my dreams and we've been dating, but I just had another dream and it was him and I talking on the phone I was telling him how much I love him and he started crying saying how he can't move on even though he has been telling me he's moved on. And while he was crying he was telling me how much he loves me and stuff. Of course at the end of the dream we ended up getting back together. My friends say It's God telling you that you will get back together, but You have to believe and have faith and hope and then he will give you the steps to get him back.

So was this a dream or a premonition? How can I tell the difference?
 
To me my dreams are quite different from my own premonitions, premonitions are extremely strong feelings which seem to come out of no where, where as a dream usually occurs to me when I am asleep and I remember it as soon as I wake up. The premonitions seem to make more sense after the fact, not exactly the exact thing but something very similar dose actually occur in life, of course after the fact; *(out of the feeling I get;) a newer understanding about some for sure deeper-thing, which I felt at the moment of it...whereas those dreams seem to have a deeper twist to them.
