My group and I are completely new to dungeons and dragons and I have been given the burden of being the Dungeon Master. I have run one session so far which wasn't very successful, I prepared adequately, I believe. The problem is although my players seemed interested enough in what I was saying they didn't really contribute too much or "get into the game". I need some tips on how to engage players and get them thinking and voicing their ideas and such.
I will give a simple example.
EXAMPLE------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DM: At the stone watch tower upon the highest point in the village, the captain of the guard seems to be busy organising a battalion of scout cavalry, as you draw closer it becomes apparent that not only is he busy he is almost run of his feet from some obviously serious issue that you don't yet know about.
Cleric: Err, yes, what happens now?
DM: For the moment you have completed your major quests and have some time on your hands in this village, you can explore the village and earn some gold or you could go to the markets and resupply.
Warrior: What do you mean, your the dungeon master aren't you?
DM: Like I said, you have the opportunity now to choose your own path in this campaign.
Wizard: Well, I don't know, don't ask me.
The characters don't consult each other or make a creative decision on what they should do next and quickly lose focus.

WAT DO????!!!!
I will give a simple example.
