During WW2 why didn't we stop selling to Germany just like we did to Japan?

We completely STOPPED selling under Roosevelt's orders ANYTHING to Japan and started restricting their empire take overs in indonesia and stuff -- (this is what made them mad and made them bomb Pearl Harbor)
We learned this in history...
and I am sitting there thinking...
WHY DIDN'T WE DO THE SAME WITH GERMANY?
Germany in NO way would have got so powerful without us investing in them.

Why the heck did we not pull the plug on sales as soon as we saw Hitler was a bad guy??!?!?!?

WTF!
 
Because America liked the Nazis but we fought them because...I don't know I guess we liked the Allies better.
 
Because a lot of Americans were simpathetic to Germany. At the time nearly all of the population was descended from Europe. This meant that people had family in Germany and England. Because of this for both world wars it wasnt always clear cut which side the U.S. would support.
