DVD/CD not playing on a Compaq laptop?

I was able to play a CD/DVD until some weeks ago. Now, not even the DVD/CD drive icon in "My Computer" shows up (regardless if there is DVD in or not). Only the icon for my hard rive is still there.

When I put a DVD in, I can hear the rotation of the disk for some seconds but then it stops and nothing pops up. It is like the computer doesn't even know the CD/DVD drive is full.

What should I do?

Thank you
BTW: I'm using Windows 7 but I am having a problem with regards to the genuineness of my copy. I have no idea why, because I actually BOUGHT my copy from a friend.

No cash to buy new PC, sorry..... I'll just have to deal with what I have.

Run the fixit on the right. This is a common issue.

I would go to your Device manager and see if a cdrom is listed on the list. If it is, unistall and reinstall the drivers or just remove the device and reboot it should recognize and configure the cd rom automatically. If it doesn't you'll probably need a new drive, unless an internal cable came loose.
