DVD/CD-Rom drive doesn't work on HP Pavilion Laptop?

I have a HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop that my dad gave to me as a hand-me-down after high school graduation in 2007. According to my dad, it was new when he gave it to me.

The problem is my DVD/CD-Rom drive doesn't read any disk I put in there.

I have no idea what happened! It worked fine before I went to France on May 20 and when I came back on June 13, it couldn't read any disk I put in there! (Though I'm not sure that leaving in the laptop bag and put it in a really compact closet might have done something to it... my dad said "no.")

Recently, I got a new external DVD/CD-Rom drive from eBay with a software and two USB cords and even that one doesn't work on my HP Pavilion even though it was compatible with it.

I went to device manager and try to get this solution fix but it said "could not load driver's software" then it ask me if I wanted to send the information. Also looking at the device status, it said "windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information is incomplete or damaged" and it said that for both the laptop's disk drive and external disk drive. Please help me.
