DVD drive interfering with audio and video playback?
I have a 3-year-old HP laptop (DV4000 series) with a Matshita UJ 840 DVD/CD drive. For some reason, the drive usually shows up with an error in my Device Manager, and then doesn't appear in My Computer at all.

The real problem, though, is that when the DVD rom registers an error, all programs slow way down, and audio and video playback (for streaming internet or harddrive-based media) are jerky, laggy, and garbled.

I did a system recovery, reinstalled the OS and my other programs, and the computer worked well for a few days. Then, suddenly, music and video were intolerable and when I looked in Device Manager, the drive was registering an error again. I then physically removed the drive from my laptop, and audio and video played great again.

I have not been able to find any driver or firmware downloads for this drive, but I'm not sure if that would help anyway.

Have any of you heard of any problem like this before? Do you have any suggestions for fixing it?

Thanks.
