dvd-rom drive wont recognize dvd-r disc?

I have windows xp professional and the dvd-rom drive will not recognize the data on the JVC dvd-r disc. I have a cheerleading video that was recorded and I would like to watch it or upload it and for some reason when I put in the disc, it doesn't recognize the data all it says is dvd-r. it also says it the disc has 0 bytes of free space and 0 bytes in total size.

How was the DVD recorded?

If the disk was not finalised in the machine that burnt the disk you will not be able to view it.
 
The most likely thing is the disc was not finalized when it was made. However some dvd readers can only read +r disc while others can only read -r disc, Does you computer read other -r disc? Does the disc work elsewhere?
