Ebooks -- When were they first introduced?

My husband and I are debating when ebooks first appeared (the hand held devices for reading and/or purchasing books). I say they were around before 2001, just not especially common. He says they came after 2005.

A little help?
 
they were arround before 2001 but didn't become popular untill 2005. I mean that more effort was put into making them after 2005, with the new E-ink and e-paper being made. I would wait a few years if your thinking about buying them. they are to expensive now and the display and interface systems could use some work.

According to the website for Read an EBook Week, they've technically been around since about 1971, but "The major publishing companies finally took notice of the e-book movement around 2001."
