EDGE on My blackberry pearl----what is it??? anyone who owns a pearl..?

Everytime i turn my phone on, below the signal bars is a word- "edge". What is that???

I just have the family plan, no data plan for blackberry,
are they charging me for EDGE or is standard and normal for it to say that???

THE REASON I'M ASKING IS I DON'T WANT THE BILL TO COME AND BE LIKE 300 DOLLARS
 
i think if its in all CAPS you can connect to a blackberry server for email, (if your job had one for their company) and if its in lowercase, its regular service.
