Edward Cullen's Breathing...?

So since it's so hard for Edward to be around Bella because she smells so good and appetizing,
why doesn't he just stop breathing around her?
I know he says that it's uncomfortable to go without a sense of smell for a long period of time,
but isn't that better than wanting to kill your true love?

I think having the intentions of killing your true love are far bigger probelems...

I don't think Twilight is really supposed to make that much sense. Wasn't it written by a house wife? Not some knowledgeable author that goes and makes sure there aren't any holes in the stories logic.
