Email on the BlackBerry Pearl?

I thought you could email on the BlackBerry without the extra internet service. I know you can do that on other phones, you just send it like a text, right? But I can't set up my email because it is trying to access the internet through the BlackBerry and I don't have it. Am I wrong? If I can set it up without internet service, how do I do it?
