Equation for a "bell curve"?

Is it not as simple as I thought? We're studying poynomial functions in precalc... do I not have enough math experience to be able to know this already?
How do you write (and transform) the equation for a bell curve? (I'm talking about that thing that looks like 1/4 of a sine wave, but not quite. Domain: (-?,?), Range: (0,X)U(X,0))
