Excercise bike is painful!!?

I spent nearly $400 on an exercise bike at Sports Authority two weeks ago. I even paid to have them come and put it together for me. I was torn between getting that or a treadmill, but I opted for the exercise bike because it didn't have to be plugged in since it ran off of batteries. I am beginning to regret this completely because the bike tires out my legs so much that it's painful after the first 4 minutes and I'm unable to continue. Will I get used to this eventually or should I switch to a treadmill?

By the way, I am 291 pounds and have been very motivated with my diet for the past 2 months and have lost 3 pants sizes just by eating less and eating healthier alone.

I think the treadmill would motivate me more because I can't just stop like how I can stop pedaling on the bike. The treadmill would push me to keep going

What do you think? And could I return the bike fully put together?
I suppose it could be because I'm out of shape. I know I'm overweight, but I am actually really active for my weight. I am always moving, I don't get out of breath or winded doing anything and I walk to and from work a few times a day (nearly a ten minute walk, which I admit isn't much but I walk there and back 2 or 3 times a day). The bike just is torture on my legs and I don't know why
 
just try going longer every time you go on and you might eventually get used to it. if it has a warranty, use it until it almost runs out and if your still not used to it, bring it back
 
before you return anything i highly suggest you mess around with the height settings and try it at a lower and higher seat level and see if that helps.


its possible your legs are bent too much, or too extended, which would explain why you feel so much pain after only a few minutes


it sounds to me like your seat is too low. you should raise it up a few notches and give it a try

if you still don't like it i imagine they will accept the bike fully assembled for return, although they may charge 10% restocking fee
 
It's fine you will get used to it, maybe try a lower setting until you are, then build up it's resistance the better you get.
Your legs will hurt a little to start with,as they are not used to the motion and pressures they are being put to - although if you fell it's excessive ask your doctor you may need supports, I suffer with shin splints and need knee supports when I exercise - but if you stick with it, it will get easier, honest.
A bike is better than a treadmill any as it doesn't jar the your knees at all and gives more support - besides treadmills are very heavy, so can only go on the ground floor really.

You are doing fantastic so far, with the weight you have lost, I don't know you and I'm proud of you, keep it up you'll get there.

i prefer the bike because i have flat feet. i would try a low resistance level till you get used to it.
