...or just plain creepy? Seriously. Why are religious types so fired up about who other people sleep with and how they do it? Some of them even have an opinion on how people touch their own bodies in the privacy of their own home. (Yeah, I'm looking at you, Christine O'Donnell.)

Why, oh why, do they care?

They believe that it's their business to protect people from what they consider to be "wrong". While normal people view it as creepy and nosy behavior, religious types justify it by saying their trying to "save" us from wrong doing....

Because it's one of the ways to control a crowd. Wich is the only thing theism is actually good at.

Let's not forget that the kings and leaders of countries didn't see religion as anything else then usefull.

They like to think they are protecting your from yourself (by looking over your back fence).
It's the old "Brother's Keeper" story... from "Their book"

Various reasons.

Some people are sex-negative because they don't get much, and they're jealous of people who do (or as a type of sour grapes - pretending that the reason they don't get any is because they don't want any, as opposed to the reality that they have trouble getting it). Others are for the simple reason that they were raised that way; it doesn't really occur to them NOT to be. Still others may be sexually withdrawn as a way of commoditizing sex - playing hard-to-get, to to speak.

As for religions, many of them are sex-negative for the same reason than many of them encourage fasting: self-deprivation as a ritual is a good way of making believers feel 'invested' in a religion. Someone who's denied themselves sex for most of their adult lives isn't going to be very willing to entertain the idea that it was all for nothing, just the same as someone who's routinely deprived themselves of food isn't.

need to change "home of the brave" to "home of the wingnuts"
