Explain to me why this is funny?

I was watching an episode of All in the Family, and in it, Gloria (Archie's daughter) accused Archie of being afraid of sex. He said "If I was afraid of sex you wouldn't be here. Right Edith?"

Edith has to think for a while, and says "I'm trying to remember."

The laugh track got crazy with this. But why is this funny?
 
Because it means he had sex with some one giving birth to Gloria.
 
It is funny because it has been so long since he and Edith had sex she is having a hard time remembering, and this is implying that he must be afraid of sex if Edith can't remember the last time.
